Is there ever really a “fearless leader”? I don’t think so. I think that the people who are named “fearless leaders” are actually scared shitless. I think that they spend their time calculating risks, making sure everything runs smoothly, and trying not to lose their sanity in the process.
At least that’s how I feel.
I think the “fearless leaders” are the people who, despite all of their fears, get up and do something. They are the ones who make the decisions, make the shots, and in the end await the consequences (good and bad) of their actions. They are the people who make mistakes and learn from them at the end of the day. They are the people who don’t back down.
My mentor told me “a decision is always better than no decision”. Those words echoed in my brain while I was deciding how to best handle an issue today. I was so unsure of myself. I didn’t know how people would react to my decision or if it was the right one. But I weighed the pros and cons of my options and went with one that seemed the better choice. I then told my team the decision.
I’m not used to deciding things for other people.
But someone has to do it.
There is no such thing as a “fearless leader”. But there is something to be said for a “decisive leader”.
